Making it through the work week…

Today is FRIDAY and we, at Bubbly on a Budget, have made it through another work week.  After all the vacations are over and summer is winding down, it can be harder to get through the weekend.  So, we thought we would let you in on how exactly we make it through a week.  We both have our pick me up activities and here are a few.


1. Online shopping – Online shopping is perfect.  It can be done from the privacy of my home and I can almost always find a good coupon code.  Tip:  ALWAYS search for a coupon code before buying.  And there is nothing better than opening up the mailbox to see a beautiful package waiting.

2. Hitting the gym – I must admit I do not love working out.  But, I have never finished a yoga or cycling class thinking, “Boy, I wish I hadn’t done that.”  The gym allows me to de-stress and burn a few calories in the process.

3. Time with my fiancé – We love to watch scary movies and this is the perfect little escape during the work week.

4. Grocery shopping – I know this doesn’t sound like a pick me up, but, I really enjoy the quietness to grocery shopping.  And I recently have started couponing, and the thrill of money saved really does help me get through the week.  This week I spent $62 and saved $66 and I actually scored Deer Park® Brand Sparkling Natural Spring Water, in the lemon and lime flavors, as part of my haul.

5. Reality TV – There is nothing better than hitting up “On Demand,” to catch up on all the shows I have missed.  I skip the gym one day, get some healthy snacks lined up, and watch the majority of the shows.


1. Cooking – This is quite easily one of my favorite things to do after work.  It’s like a mini DIY project.  You have your supplies and you have an end product in mind.  I love the process of preparing, cooking, and enjoying my food.  It also helps to have a glass of wine while it’s in process 😉

2. Adult Rec League – I play on a co-ed slow pitch softball team every Monday night in the Summer, Spring and Fall.  It’s a great group of people and I think a majority of us see it as a stress reliever.  I always look forward to those couple of hours of exercise and make sure I’m constantly hustling because frankly, sometimes it just feels good to kick your own ass after a day of sitting at work.  And you can’t beat quality time with good people.

3. Movies – I love nothing more than having no responsibilities after work because that allows me to get comfy, sprawl out in bed, and watch a good movie.  Whether it’s Netflix, Redbox, or a movie I’ve seen 100x before, it is so relaxing to just vegg out in bed with a good movie to fall asleep to and there’s nothing in this world that makes me happier than getting plenty of sleep!

4. Family and Friends – Spending time with my family is pretty awesome.  They are hilarious and fun and pick me up when I’m down.  Nothing makes me happier than having my man, my family, and my close friends together just hanging out, it when I feel at peace and the happiest.

5. Healthy Livin’ – Being healthy does amazing things for my body and mind. CRAZY RIGHT?  But really, drinking plenty of water, getting sleep, eating right, and exercise does wonders for my attitude.  I’m not a huge water person, so I supplement that with Deer Park Sparkling Water; the lime flavor is THE BEST and the carbonation is a necessity for me.  Trying to maintain my health goes along with all the other things I love to do throughout the week: cooking my turkey burgers, softball and exercise, and falling asleep to a movie.

Fashionable Fitness – Playlist Inspired

I love nothing more than building a theme around my outfits.  It gives you an idea of what you want your overall look to say and makes it easier to create!  While I love a good deal and finding good buys online and in stores, sometimes it’s just necessary to get your creative juices flowing and allow the artist within to take over.  Today’s post utilized Polyvore, a crazy cool website that allows you to build your own fashion “mood boards”, create your own looks, and shop for specific items.  It is a great resource for anyone that is into fashion. 

I decided to take 5 songs from my workout playlist, and use them as fashion inspiration.  While some of these items are more on the pricey side, I wanted to show that creativity 100% translates into fashion AND fitness!

Why not take a patterned pair of leggings and use that as the base of your workout look?  The rest is simply an add-on to this very cool and very feminine look.

Fashionable Fitness – Part 2

So, every year we resolve to work out more and eat better and this year was no different.  My current workout routine consists of going to the gym and hitting up a cycle class, some yoga, and a few days of my own “routines.”  If you buy clothes for an occasion, you get excited, correct?  So, if you buy workout clothes, you will be excited to wear them.  And once I have the clothes on I feel obligated to work out.  Ridiculous, I know, but hey… it works for me.

Fashionable Fitness – Part 1

This year I’ve been focused on being healthier and happier; better diet, more sleep, and exercising several times a week.  Sounds annoying right?  Eating better and getting more sleep comes easier for me than getting pumped up for an intense workout.  The one thing that does give me that extra motivation to workout is simple and undoubtedbly pretty pathetic; cute workout gear. 

It seems silly, but for those of us who love fashion, looking good and feeling good does not stop at the gym or inside your own home.  My current workout routine consists of popping in the Insanity DVDs 5-7 days a week.  This means I am in the comfort of my own personal space, free to wear whatever I want!

This week I went on an online hunt for fun and functional sports bras, sure to make you look and feel like a true fitness fashionista.

Muscle Monday Protein Shake

I love a good protein shake after a hard workout; but, this girl is on a budget and cannot buy one every time I hit the gym.  So, I have come up with a few recipes that I really enjoy.  Today, I will show my pineapple protein shake.


You will need:

  • mixer/blender
  • vanilla whey protein (Target)
  • canned pineapple (and juice)
  • ice
  • flax seed (dollar store)
  • greek yogurt


First, put in as much protein as you would like.  Place close attention to the back.  I put in one scoop which was 25g of protein.


I then added more protein by using greek yogurt instead of frozen yogurt.  I only used half of the container.  Greek yogurt has a sour taste and using only half keeps the shake from taking on that flavor. Tip: If you freeze greek yogurt and it helps thicken the shake up.  You can also eat it like frozen greek yogurt and it is a lot cheaper.  If you want to enjoy it like ice cream, pull it out about 30 minutes before consumption so it can thaw a bit.


Next, I add in flax seed; I actually found these at a dollar store a while ago (check expiration date).  I used one spoon full.  The seeds grind up enough so I do not notice then and this is a great place to add in more protein, fiber, iron, and omega 3.


Next, put in about 7-8 ice cubes and about 10 pineapple chunks.  Pour in a little of the pineapple juice from the can to keep the ingredients moving in the blender.  Then, mix!  You may need to shake the mixer just to make sure nothing is getting stuck to the sides or top of the cup.


Done.  I usually just take it and drink it right from the blender cup.  Be creative, substitute the pineapples for peanut butter and banana.  Tip: Drink the shake within 30 minutes of your workout.
