Fall Trend: Bergundy Lips

Bergundy Lips

I really love the dramatic effect a bergundy lip gives you.  It is bold and daring and acts as the accessory to your outfit.  Fall is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to makeup.  I’m not a big lipstick fan, but when I do wear lipstick, it serves a purpose.  This bergundy lip allows you to go minimal and light on the rest of your makeup, but still says va-va voom.  As you can see, it looks gorgeous on all hair colors and skin shades.  Next time you’re out, try a darker shade of lipstick for a dramatic and beautiful fall look.

Designer Fashion

We at Bubbly on a Budget love fashion that is inexpensive; but, as we get older, we want the items to also stand the test of time.  We want both quality and quantity.  We are clearly not the only ones and that is why different stores are linking up with high end designers to offer items at a more affordable price.  Target promotes their partnerships and usually has the collection for a few months or until its sells out.  But, there are other stores that continue to stock the collaboration and here are a few.

Kohl’s and Derek Lam

Derek Lam for Kohl’s – $54.00 (the shirt is on clearance for less than $10)

These pants are a must for the fall and great for almost every season.  The pleating is not flattering on all figures; so, be sure to try them on in the store or when they first arrive.  Kohl’s has one of the best return policies; so, don’t be afraid to shop online.  Also, be sure to check for a coupon code before ordering.  They always have great deals!  Be sure to check out their clearance section online.  You can find great finds there are as well.  Like the dress below.  They also have a skirt, tank dress, and tank top available, on clearance, in a similar print.

Vera Wang for Kohl’s
Vera Wang has a vast collection at Kohl’s ranging from clothes and sleepwear to cosmetics and shoes.  The cutout sweater and tassel smoking loafers are perfect for the fall and winter.  They would incorporate well into a work wardrobe as well as everyday. Check out a few of the Simply Vera pieces that are currently on clearance.  There were also a few pairs of great jeans for less than $25.00.
Christian Siriano for Payless

Women's Arabella Shootie

Christian Siriano – $56.99

Women's Bell Crossbody

Christian Siriano – $26.99

These wedges and bag are amazing.  I loved Christian Siriano on Project Runway and I love his collection at Payless.  I know what you’re thinking, Payless?  But, don’t count them out just yet.  The current collection has some great booties, heels, and bags for the upcoming season!

Lastly is Phillip Lim for Target.  The collection is currently preview only but is set to launch on September 15, 2013.  It is has very tailored sportswear and accessories and is described as being, “sophisticated yet effortless.”  The collection is rumored to range between $20 and $50 and is being called 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target.  And if it its anything like the past collaborations, everything will fly off the shelves and your best bet will be eBay at 4 times the cost.  If you see anything you like, be sure to be at the store or already on the Target website when it launches.

Fashionable Fitness – Playlist Inspired

I love nothing more than building a theme around my outfits.  It gives you an idea of what you want your overall look to say and makes it easier to create!  While I love a good deal and finding good buys online and in stores, sometimes it’s just necessary to get your creative juices flowing and allow the artist within to take over.  Today’s post utilized Polyvore, a crazy cool website that allows you to build your own fashion “mood boards”, create your own looks, and shop for specific items.  It is a great resource for anyone that is into fashion.

I decided to take 5 songs from my workout playlist, and use them as fashion inspiration.  While some of these items are more on the pricey side, I wanted to show that creativity 100% translates into fashion AND fitness!

1. No Doubt “I’m Just a Girl”

Why not take a patterned pair of leggings and use that as the base of your workout look?  The rest is simply an add-on to this very cool and very feminine look.

Crop Top – Newlook.com $7.72, Floral Leggings – Forever21.com $11, Nike Free Twist – Nike.com $99, Gym Bag – Etsy.com $39

2. Beyonce “Get Me Bodied”

This look is fierce and fun.  The pop of red under the Brooklyn tank paired with dark grey leggings and leopard nikes is sure to be an attention grabber at any local gym.

Tank – My-wardrobe.com $66, Nike Capris – Nike.com $60, Sports Bra – Avenue32.com $49, Nike Free Sneakers – Nike.com $150

3. Irene Cara – “Flashdance…What a Feeling”

For this look I wanted to go a little 80’s (for obvious reasons).  Throw in pops of neon with the headband, crop top, and sneaks and keep it classic “Flashdance” by adding the grey sweats.

Crop Top – Newlook.com $7.72, Nike Sweats – Macys.com $40, Headband – Nelly.com $15, Nike Fly Knit – AlohaRag.com $150

4. Jay-Z ft. Justin Timberlake – “Holy Grail”

For this look I kept it clean and sleek.  I love the silver-white-rust color palette and the look is masculine, yet fun.20130814-081450.jpg

Hoodie – Adidas.com $90, Metallic Shorts – PacSun.com $21, Nike Crew Socks – Nike.com $14, Nike Free Run – MyTheresa.com $170

5. Survivor – “Eye of the Tiger”

This look is great for a jog on a fall afternoon.  It is vibrant and truly captures the essence of the song with the leopard, orange, and heather grey sweats.

Trousers – NeedSupply.com $78, Nike Top – Macys.com $33, Nike Free Running Shoe – Nordstrom.com $110, Vans Backpack – office.co.uk $46

Who else thinks I should be a spokesperson for Nike?

Mix and Match Fashion

I am a big fan of mixing and matching patterns and materials when it comes to DIY projects and making my greeting cards.  This attitude definitely transfers into my personal style as I also love combining funky patterns and uncommon materials together.  However, mixing patterns and fabrics together can be tricky when you’re creating an outfit so I’ve put together a few of my own favorite ways to keep people on their toes when it comes to my personal style!

Stripes and animal print is BOLD, to say the least.  While I would normally only wear one pattern or the other, this is a great way to stand out for a night out to celebrate your birthday.  Stick with a smaller sized animal print, shown in the picture and wider stripes; it’s more appealing to the eye!

This is one of the “safer” ways to mix and match patterns.  This is a great brunch outfit or walking around a fair or carnival.  While the print of the pants is bold, the soft colors tone it down and make it sweet and girly.  However, by pairing it with a different patterned top, such as a fitted polka dot shirt, you add an element of surprise that just works!

No fashion post of mine would be complete without a dash of leather-I just can’t resist.  I love the contrast of the edgy leather with the soft crochet maxi skirt.  The shape of the cropped leather top is soft, however, so it keeps the outfit cohesive.  I’d definitely rock this at an outside, nighttime rock concert.20130808-092027.jpg

Again, I love the idea of mixing femininity with a masculine touch.  Why not pair a cute sneaker wedge with a body-hugging dress?  This is a fun way to be casually dressed up.  I’d wear this ensemble to a date night at the movies or a weekend shopping trip!

Look for Less: Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff has recently become a fashion role model for me.  She is right up there with Jessica Alba, Nicole Richie, and Rachel Bilson.  I love that she has a casually cute style during the day, but bumps it up with an edgy, feminine style for a date night and events.  And because my body type is similar to hers, I can get an idea of what shapes and styles would work for me.

Her look below is my ideal date night ensemble.  Hilary’s version is well over $1,000 but it can easily be replicated for a more reasonable price.  See for yourself!

Hilary Duff’s Look

A.L.C Shay Top $260

Flavia d’Orsay Pumps $795

Edgement Stretch-denim Skinny Jeans $239

Cami with Mesh Panel $29.70 – Asos.com

Hilary’s keyhole tank is sexy, without being over the top.  The Asos version gives that sex appeal with the mesh panel and delicate material and the thin straps are perfect for a summer night.

Mod Stripe Skinny Jeans $27.80 – Forever21.com

YOWZA!  These pants are loud, I admit.  But they’re too fun to pass up.  Less than $30 for a pair of statement pants is very reasonable!  Whether they’re flower printed, geometric shapes, or stripes, every girl should own a staple pair of YOWZA pants.

Since I couldn’t decide on just 1 pair for this outfit, I went with a variety of va-va voom pointed-toe options:

1. Copertina Suede Pump $89.98 (Chineselaundry.com) The Copertina Suede Pumps provide a pop of color, just like Hilary’s.

2. Vice Pump $68.00 (NastyGal.com) The Vice Pumps are my favorite of the 4;  the white cap toe is the selling point for this pair!

3. Paris Jaze Printed Pump $59.95 (DSW.com) The printed pair is perfect for those nights you are feeling extra fantastic; nothing says “I’m here to be noticed” like mixing prints.

4. Ella Pump $68.00 (NastyGal.com) The Ella Pump is a beautiful mint color that screams “60’s Mod”, when paired with black and white.

Second Hand Reinvention – Long Cardigan

I was recently on Pinterest and saw an amazing tie-dyed, long cardigan.  I loved the way it looked with a pair of jeans and thought why not give it a try?  I went to my local Goodwill and checked out the long dress section looking for something with buttons that I could simply unbutton and pair over a simple tank.  There were plenty of dresses with buttons all the way down; but none of them seemed right.  The majority had elastic or cinching at the waist that looked odd when unbuttoned.  I was about to leave when I saw the long robes.  I hit the jackpot.  A long, satin, floral robe.  It was a winner!!  This project will require a sewing machine and beginner skills.

You will need:

  • robe
  • sewing machine
  • scissors
  • iron

I didn’t photograph this step, but, you first want to try the robe on.  You want to see wear it needs to be edited.

After trying mine on, I decided I wanted the sleeves shortened and the sides taken in about an inch on each side.  I could have taken in more on the sides and lifted the sleeves up some, but, I wanted to achieve a relaxed, oversized looked.DSC_0127

First cut off all belt loops and other things that may be attached.  They will only get in the way and make the finished product still look like a robe.  Next, to shorten the sleeves, decide how short you would like them.  Cut at a mark that is about one inch longer than the sleeve you want.

Once you have cut the first sleeve, fold the robe in half vertically so that you have matched up both shoulders.  This will help you find the exact line to cut on the other sleeve.  Once lined up, the cut sleeve should lay on top of the other, cut across the other sleeve at this line.

(after first fold that has been ironed)

(after second fold that has been ironed)

Once both sleeves are cut, plug your iron in and turn the robe inside out.  Find the sleeve, and roll about 1/2 of an inch over and iron to create a seam.  Fold over again about 1/2 of an inch and iron down.  This will help you when you go to sew.  Complete these steps with the other sleeve.

(Here is a view of the stitch when the robe is turned the right way)

Head to your sewing machine and do a simple stich around the sleeve.  Make sure you are paying attention and don’t sew the sleeve hole together.  Once the first sleeve is completed, do the same with the other.

(sorry for the yellowish tint; next time, I’ll take the picture with the sewing machine off)

After the sleeves are complete, keep the robe inside out.  To take in the sides, I found the side seam and folded in vertically at the crease.  I lined the inside of the sewing foot up with the crease and used this as a guide.  Stitch all the way down the seam until you have gotten to the end.  Do the exact same with the other side.  You are done!

I thought it gave off a boho vibe, so, I went with it.

Blonde vs. Brunette – Celeb Challenge

This week the challenge will be to recreate a celeb’s casual look for less.  We will both include the prices and places to find the pieces.

BLONDE: Jessica Alba

I love Jessica Alba’s laid back style.  Whether rocking the red carpet or going to the park with her kids, she is the definition of chic.

Jessica Alba

I love a great maxi and the floral pattern and bright colors on this dress take it to another level.  I love the way she added the cutoff jean jacket and casual accessories.

Colorful print maxi – Target $29.99

The colors on this maxi are almost dead on.  It isn’t floral; so, if that is what you are dead set on, check out Target’s website they had a few different options.

Short sleeve jean jacket – Target $29.99

This jean jacket is adorable and with the $30 price tag is perfect.  It is extremely versatile and will transcend time and seasons.

With the shoes, you could go with a pair similar to the picture (like the ones I included) or go with a cute gladiator flat sandal.
The colors of this scarf are neutral and play well with the entire outfit.  The infinity scarf will easily work its way into your wardrobe.

Round frame sunglasses – Forever 21 $5.80

These are not the exact shape; but, the frame style is very trendy right now and they are the perfect shade of brown for the dress.

BRUNETTE: Julianne Hough

Julianne is looking very edgy these days.  Her cute, blonde bob pairs so well with her laidback style.

This jacket with faux leather sleeves is a must have for a casual day ensemble.  Totally digging it.

Forever 21 - $42.80

Forever 21 – $42.80

This simple V-neck tee is versatile and thing; perfect for those warm summer nights.

Target - $8.00

Target – $8.00

Can’t go wrong with a comfy pair of denim shorts to balance out the jacket.

Forever 21 – $19.80

I don’t personally wear denim shorts often, but if I did, they would look like this.  The denim keeps the look casual and fun.

Forever21 - $39.80

Forever21 – $39.80

These boots keep the outfit edgy and I love pairing combat boots with shorts.  Very laid-back but still put together.

Forever 21 - $7.80

Forever 21 – $7.80

Finish the look with a pair of round sunnies.  I would rock this look for a shopping trip or a casual summer date.
